Encore! Sistema Québec is pleased to announce that it has received a $4,500 grant from Opération Enfant Soleil. This generous amount will be used to purchase violins for a new music program aimed at children in downtown Montreal and its surroundings.

In the photograph, we can see some of these students who have joyfully discovered their new instruments over the past few weeks.

These violins are not just mere instruments; they are often the starting point of a musical and personal journey that changes lives.

We sincerely thank Opération Enfant Soleil who, with its support, enables Encore! Sistema Québec to continue its educational mission. Together, we work to promote music as a tool for social transformation to foster the well-being, creativity, and community of young generations.

About Encore! Sistema Québec:

Founded in 2012, Encore! Sistema Québec (ESQ) embodies the El Sistema movement’s vision, leveraging music as a transformative force to empower at-risk youth. Through group music sessions, students learn to play string instruments, engage in ensemble performances, and develop essential skills such as discipline and teamwork, enriching their self-confidence. ESQ has built enduring partnerships with diverse communities across the greater Montréal area and Kahnawake, enriching the lives of numerous students with the gift of music.

Playing in an orchestra is a musical form and manifestation of joy and expression. For students, it’s a fun and safe space to develop confidence in themselves and their fellow teammates in the orchestra. For the greater community, it can offer a beautifully positive spirit that helps instill lifelong values and social commitments from students and families to their communities.” says Michael DePasquale, Head Teacher for the new downtown location.

Meet Madison and Emily!

Audrey DounavisSt. Gabriel, What's New

As the school year draws to a close, we proudly introduce Madison and Emily, two accomplished graduates from our St-Gabriel site, whose heartfelt testimonials reveal the profound influence of music education in shaping their identities and showcasing its transformative power.

Let’s start by introducing Emily, an enthusiastic member of our St-Gabriel program, who, during her five-year journey, has cultivated her passion for music, igniting a burgeoning aspiration to pursue a future career as a musician. Reflecting on her journey, she expresses, “Playing music fills me with a deep sense of joy, becoming an integral part of my identity.” Emily’s dedication has not only enhanced her musical talent but has also played a significant role in her personal growth. When she was younger, Emily struggled with shyness and found it difficult to communicate with others. However, through her participation in Encore! Sistema’s program, not only has she overcome her shyness, but she has also developed a deep love for performing in front of enthusiastic audiences. Emily’s journey stands as a testament to the transformative power of music, not only in her musical abilities but also in her personal growth and development.

Now, let’s turn our attention to Madison, whose entire primary school journey has been accompanied by the steadfast companionship of the Encore! Sistema program, growing into supportive community or belonging and inspiration for her. Over the years, her unwavering dedication and commitment have propelled her to become a flourishing musician. Reflecting on her experience, she beautifully describes music as a magical thread that weaves through her life, connecting her dreams and bringing endless joy. Madison acknowledges the challenges she encounters, particularly in playing slow, sustained melodies while synchronizing with others. However, her passion for music drives her to persevere. With resolute determination, she states, “Even though I am graduating from primary school this year, I am committed on returning to Sistema next year. It is more than just a program to me; it is a second home—a place where I can thrive with happiness, ambition, creativity and support. I want to come back to get to play in the orchestra, but also to assist the teachers.”

Let us applaud Madison and Emily for their exceptional dedication and remarkable growth as musicians and individuals. As they transition into high school and embark on new endeavors, we extend our heartfelt wishes for their continued success. The future holds endless possibilities, and we have no doubt that these extraordinary young women will leave their mark as they continue to embrace the power of music and their own incredible potential!

Kahnawake, Quebec – Students from Kahnawake participating in the Encore! Sistema program showcased their emerging musical skills during a special fiddling session held at the Kahnawake Tekakwitha School last week. After performing a fiddle tune called “Boil the Cabbage,” the children participated in a fun and interactive public workshop led by professional fiddlers to learn and improve their fiddling skills. Guest artists Laura Risk, Elizabeth Anderson, McKinley James and community elders then joined their talents for a memorable fiddling session that got both children and adults dancing!

Encore! Sistema is celebrating its 10 year anniversary

Audrey DounavisIn the media, Kahnawake, Public appearences, What's New

Encore! Sistema Québec (ESQ) is proud to be entering its 11th year of partnerships with the Kahnawake Education Centre (KEC). During these past 10 years, 367 Elementary School students and 15 High School students have registered to participate in the extra-curricular music program. Although for some of the students it was a short stay, their participation enabled them to try out new string instruments, participate in a concert, sing and experience the euphoric feeling of playing along professional musicians in a professional venue. For others, the ESQ program lasted most of their elementary and high school years and was a place where they found a friend in a teacher or another student. Through the ESQ program, some of those students discovered a hidden talent and a way to express themselves unleashing their creativity through the language of art and music.

The 2022-2023 Sistema music program for students in elementary school is up and running out of Kateri School. It is the first time since the unset of the pandemic that the face to face program is offered and we are thrilled with the unprecedented number of students who registered!

Encore!Sistema community,

Following the lockdown last March our students and music teachers were devastated that our program and our end of year concerts could not take place.

Despite many challenges the ESQ team was eager to continue teaching in order to offer musical opportunities to our students and our virtual Sistema program was launched in the fall of 2020.

Six months later we are extremely proud to showcase some of our students in this first ever, Encore!Sistema virtual concert. The short audio – visual recordings are an incredible achievement as most of the students only started playing their instrument this year and never had a face to face lesson!

Although a virtual music program can never replace the richness of the live ensemble experience, these recordings of the students’ work is a souvenir of their perseverance and determination to engage in musical expression and to make music in spite the challenges. Above all, the virtual concert provides participating students with a tremendous sense of pride and satisfaction and a “concert” that they can share with friends and family anywhere in the world.

On behalf of the entire ESQ team I take this opportunity to thank our partners (St Gabriel School, the Kahnawake Education Centre and the Parc Extension Youth Organization) and our loyal sponsors and supporters as well as our dedicated tutors and parents who have helped make it all possible.

Kind Regards

Theodora Stathopoulos
